The Great Buffy vs Supernatural Challenge – Part One

In case you didn’t know my good friend Shauna Granger and I are currently embroiled in a two person TV Watching Hunger Games – an epic battle of genre show supremacy to see if I can finish the entirely of Suprnatural before she finishes Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Whoever wins gets to pick whether our Magetech troupe plays the Buffy or Supernatural RPG later on this year.

High stakes here folks!

I just finished the first season of Supernatural yesterday and I feeling very proud of myself. So  decided to tweet about it, like I do all of my great great accomplishments. I was feeling a lot like this:

Dean Winchester Excited

But then Shauna unloaded this haymaker on me in response:

And all at once I was like this:

Dean Winchester Laptop Close

Okay, so she’s Katniss and I’m one of the nameless kids that gets killed in the Cornucopia on the first day. Whatevs. I’m cool with that. I’m a leisurely guy and I like to do stuff at a leisurely pace. Yeah, leisurely, that’s the ticket!

Soooooo, about that Supernatural Season One….

Spoiler warning too, I guess…

The show is pretty good, not great, not yet at least. The Winchester Bros are charming and have good chemistry, they’re very believable as brothers to me – they way the fight about their father, how Dean looks out for Sam, there’s that one episode where they’re pulling pranks on each – all very brotherly. I probably like Dean more because he’s kind of a smartass which usually like in a character. Sam is fine too, he’s got wholesome, ‘aw shucks’ personality that is very likable and there’s also a whole bunch d’aaaaaw moments with some of the ladies they meet. More than a couple times he had me doing one of these:

Dean Winchester That's My Boy Gif

That said, I am looking forward to some supporting characters showing up in the future. The later episodes when the Bros meet up with the Ghostfacers (Zeddmore & Spangler!!!!!) and then reunite with their father were the strongest, I thought. They do have good chemistry, but I also enjoyed when there was a third character for them to bounce off of.

And speaking of supporting cast, one of favorite character was definitely Meg. I’ve made no bones about declaring my love for villains (one of the great parts of Buffy for me was the quality of the Big Bads each season) and she certainly fit that bill for me.

Chiiiiiiiills, baby. She was awesome and I think I’ve uncovered a spoiler while searching for this Gif that she’s going to be back, maybe recast with a different actress. I certainly hope so.

While I really enjoyed the main overarching plot with the Winchester Bros tracking their father and trying to figure out what happened to their mother, the frequency of the Monster of the Week episodes that had nothing to do with the main plot did take their toll on me. To be honest, there were a few of these episodes I just had on in the background while doing other stuff just to get through them. Not that they were all bad – Bloody Mary, the hook hand guy, the killer water, and especially Hellhouse stood out for me.

And then there was the true pinnacle of genre television.

The Racist Ghost Truck Episode.

My thoughts exactly, Dean Machine. I tell you this, my friends, if I didn’t know this show got way better in successive seasons, Racist Ghost Truck would have been the end of the road for me.

Anywho, the last few episodes with the Ghostfacers and the main plot coming together redeemed pretty much the whole season for me. Plus Meg. Always Meg. And that cliffhanger… woo! I’m on board for Season Two, which according to everyone is when the show starts to hit its stride.

So here’s to you Supernatural Season One:

You were good enough to keep me watching for another season and gave me glimmer of hope, however faint, that Shauna won’t completely obliterate me in this contest.

    OMBahahaha! Fantastic post broheim!

I think the truck episode for you was the Ned episode for me on the Buffy side of the coin. I think it’s fair that we both did not fully enjoy the first seasons of the shows. HANG IN THERE. Ghostfacers come back, they’re like shiny treats in the future because hilarious. I don’t want to give spoilers, but HANG IN THERE. There are characters who are goodies you will enjoy and one Big Bad that gives out cookies who you are going to LOVE.

And thanks for the Katniss nod, I approve. *shoulders bow – heads out to slay season 3*

      Ned episode?

Wait, do you mean Ted? LULZ….robot jerkface episode?

And YES GHOSTFACERS. The next episode of S9 is a Ghostfacer episode, and I CAN NOT WAIT.

How come I don’t remember the Ned / Ted episode? Was it hat awful I washed it from my memory?

I love comedic guest characters like the Ghostfacers – remember the Lone Gunmen on X-Files? Those guys were THE BEST.

It’s the one where Joyce is dating this guy Ted who makes stupid mini pizzas and is nasty and abusive to Buffy…and turns out to be a robot.

I will hang in there. I’m going to watch it to the end and seriously, the last three or so episodes really clicked with me and I’m psyched to see what happens after that cliffhanger.

*Washes up on shore, drags himself to watch Season 2*

Woohoo! This about sums up how I felt after finishing the season. It finished strong enough to make me go on…then S2 got a LOT stronger for me. More cohesive with a much more evident arc beginning to end…then S3 hits and it’s just pure, delicious meat. GO FORTH AND FALL IN LOVE, YOUNG PADAWAN.
